Type ‘System.Web.UI.WebControls.LoginView’ does not have a public property named ‘LoginView’

Issue:

After creating a new master page (according to instructions in “Real World Branding with SharePoint 2010 Publishing Sites“), I get a “Type ‘System.Web.UI.WebControls.LoginView’ does not have a public property named ‘LoginView'” error.

Solution

To relative newbies, the answer might not be obvious, but it appears to be caused by formatting errors in the original (otherwise excellent) article: missing forward slashes and closing angle brackets (“chevrons,” I just learned).
